If you told me I’d be on a reality dating show with a man I can’t stand while the guy I haven’t been able to forget films it all, I’d tell you to kick rocks.

Alas, here I am, pretending to fall in love with a man who’d marry himself if he could all while my TV producer best friend has front seats to it all. It’d be a lot easier if the self-centered bachelor wasn’t hot as hell and charming beyond reason when the cameras are rolling. Or if I didn’t get heart palpitations every time my best friend looked at me.

Hot, emotionally stunted men and old crushes aside, I’ve sworn off dating. I know people say that and then they’re with someone new next week, but I mean it. Since being betrayed, I’m doing this for me, myself, and I. While the other women compete for love, I’m here to collect a check and gain enough clout to help kick off my career as a makeup artist. If it’s between success or moving back in with my nagging mother, I’m not letting men knock me off my game.

The Feels With Reality Show Drama
*****Spoilers*****River and his older sister Ryan end up gaining a playmate when they’re small children because Indigo and her mother move in. The two mothers became fast friends and so did the three children. Indigo made a play for River when they were teenagers but he turned her down because he had a girlfriend and because Ryan made him promise that he wouldn’t get involved with Indigo and put the friendship in jeopardy. Fast forward and all three are now adults. Indigo finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her and she reaches out to Ryan but is unsure of her reception because she kind of cut both Ryan and River out of her life for the relationship with Javi. Moving back in with Ryan and River is just what Indigo needs and after some strong arming by Ryan, leads to Indigo landing a spot on a reality dating show that River is working on as well.Kade is the prize bachelor and star of the show, his outward persona marking him as a bad boy. But the more Indigo is around Kade, the more she realizes she just might like him and that his public persona isn’t who he really is. Indigo is adrift in her feelings for River and Kade, despite the fact she was firm in her convictions to NOT fall or feel anything for Kade. Indigo is really there for the free publicity she’ll get after the show has aired and the show’s viewers have seen her makeup skills. River is spurred into finally declaring his feelings for her, but Indigo is skeptical about the timing since they’ve been friends so long and River never showed his interest in the past. Once Indigo lets go of the fear of failing with River, she’s able to realize that’s who her deeper feelings point her toward and decides to break whatever has just begun between her and Kade before things go beyond a few kisses. Their timing is terrible to start something since Indigo is on a dating show and River’s future career could be snatched away so I cringed at the inopportune times they get away and wait anxiously for them to be busted. They do get caught but not in the way I expected. Throw in some blackmail, fights, and revelations with a heaping side of drama and this one is a page turner.I really liked the characters and how genuine they’re written. Their varied personalities and appearances were an appreciated inclusion. I also enjoyed the humor and Indigo was witty. The author did a good job I thought of not burying us too much in Indigo’s makeup expertise but giving enough to appreciate the art. We got an inside look but weren’t drowned in excruciating makeup tutorials and explanations all the time even though that was Indigo’s angle going on the show. While there some consistency issues and jumping between scenes with no transition, the story was still good.

    Worth a read
Spice scenes were short but didn’t mind it cause the drama was so juicy. Read it in pretty fast. I work 2 job and an average book take me a month to finish but i was able to finish this in 2 weeks. With that being said, This not your average book. 🙂

This book was so cute! The main characters were fleshed out and the side characters actually had their own personalities. I love books like this, the plot line was amazing and I’m so mad at myself I waited so long to actually dig into this amazing book.9/10🎄(318pgs)

A Rollercoaster of Romance, Drama, and Self-Discovery
In “Lipstick & Camera Clicks” by D.J. Murphy, readers are plunged into the chaotic world of reality television, where love triangles, messy relationships, and unexpected twists await at every turn. Told from the perspective of Indigo, a strong-willed black woman navigating the challenges of a reality dating show, this novel offers a refreshing and relatable take on the genre. At its core, “Lipstick & Camera Clicks” is a story about reclaiming one’s narrative and finding love amidst chaos. Indigo’s journey is marked by moments of self-discovery and growth as she grapples with her feelings for two very different men: River, her childhood best friend turned reality TV producer, and Kade, the self-centered bachelor at the center of the show. As the plot unfolds, readers are drawn into a whirlwind of emotions, unsure of who Indigo will ultimately choose and what the consequences will be.One of the novel’s strengths lies in its diverse and well-developed cast of characters. From Indigo’s loyal best friend Ryan to the charming yet flawed River and Kade, each character brings their own unique personality and quirks to the story. The representation of mental health issues and LGBTQ+ identities adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, allowing readers to connect with the characters on a deeper level.Despite its engaging storyline and compelling characters, “Lipstick & Camera Clicks” is not without its flaws. Some readers may find the pacing to be uneven, particularly in the latter half of the book, where the plot becomes increasingly convoluted. Additionally, the love triangle trope, while well-executed, may not appeal to all readers, especially those who prefer more straightforward romance plots.Overall, “Lipstick & Camera Clicks” is a fun and entertaining read that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. With its blend of romance, drama, and self-discovery, this novel offers a fresh take on the reality TV genre that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re a fan of reality TV or simply enjoy a good love story, this book is worth adding to your reading list.

ten out of freaking ten wow.
while i give nearly every book i read a 5 star rating for fear of hurting the author’s feelings, you don’t have to take this one with a grain of salt. Indie was incredibly relatable! She’s funny, smart, driven, and independent. Being caught between a rock and a hard place is going to be challenging for anyone at any time, but I loved each time she stood up for herself after being hurt by Javi. I myself have never been on a dating reality show but watching my fair share of love island (lol) I feel like this was such a good depiction of how twisted and selfish networks can be to real people who hand their privacy away to be televised. A happy ending is all you can really ask for with romance novels and this was as happy as happy gets!p.s. I lied, I could ask for a couple more in the series. *cough cough wink wink* sabrina & hanna, kade and his new agent 😏, ryan and ??p.p.s. finally thank you to the author for my most favorite book i’ve read this year 🩷

Unexpected whirlwind! Not what I expected and I didn’t hate it at all neither did I loveee it (just couldn’t put it down). The book had soo much drama my heart was in my chest throughout, with a flew flutters too. It’s a cute friends to lovers romance novel but it confuses it when another guy is thrown in, so I found myself skimming to skip out bits of Indie getting to know Kayde. River is your typical book boyfriend, you gotta love him and Ryan was funny all by herself. As this is my first book from the author I think it was good, as the plot wasn’t drawn out and definitely kept you engaged.Even though I would have loved to see Rivers POV even just once and wish I could’ve seen their love blossom a bit more, since it showed that she was sneaking around with River and ended up with him but spent more time with Kayde. Overall it was decent and hopefully won’t be my last book from the author.

This was just a really cute read, Indigo was one of the best written fmc I have read in a while. I understood where it was going to end and who she was going to end up with (I read the last page after reading the sample 😭). But the way D.J Murphy writes that pen game is no joke she is going to be a definate read for me now 🥰

This was cute and fun! Started to lose me in the middle though so would’ve benefited from being trimmed down (I didn’t need so much detail about the shows day to day. Get straight to the drama!)
